March 2012

Starring:  Bridget Biggs, 6th Grade Teacher, Irving Elementary

Last August, Bridget proved to herself that turning 50 wasn't the end of being active but the beginning of new challenges.  She signed up for the Tough Mudder, a race created by British Special Forces, which benefits wounded soldiers.   The race consisted of 20 obstacles, such as climbing 12 foot walls, trudging through tons of mud, entering ice water and being electrocuted by 10,000 volts of electricity, along with a 12 1/2 mile run.

She worked extremely hard for 5 months, running and lifting weights.  Her team, Crossfit Preferred, raced on Saturday, January 14th.  They successfully completed the course with a few bumps and bruises and plenty of smiles.  She proved to herself that age is just a number and you can accomplish anything you set your mind to with determination and practice.

The MPS-WIN! Wellness Program would love to hear your wellness success story.   Tell us about it by  completing the Success Spotlight form  and sending pictures to

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

After the age of 50, every man and woman should start getting screened for colon cancer. Why? Because colon cancer is considered the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., but many cases can be cured if caught early. Still not convinced?  View this video and join a panel of experts as they discuss the benefits of screening, and the different options available.
