SUMMER

 

Mayors Youth Comittee

 

Grade: Current Sophomores and Juniors

MYC is a year-long program where students attend monthly meetings, participate in community service opportunities, tour city departments and projects, and research current city issues.  The students will interact with the Mayor, City Council and staff on a regular basis to learn the ins and outs of city government. 

Students that are interested can come to counseling and pick up an application. There will be 30 applications since only 4 students can be selected.  Applications will be due in to counseling by 3:30pm on Wednesday, April 25th. The application is simple but does require a 1 page personal statement.

 

Maricopa County Teen Leadership Experience (MCLE)
Grade: Ages 12 – 17 years old
Dates: May 29 – August 3, 2012 in Maricopa County

MCLE offers a variety of hands-on opportunities through courses with various agencies in Maricopa County, provides valuable Service Learning hours and can help you investigate careers and jobs for your future.

For students to provide service to Mesa non-profit organizations and introduce students  to community organizations that they can stay involved with throughout the school year. There are 14 different volunteer projects available and transportation from downtown Mesa will be provided. Mandatory orientation is May 31, 2012. Applications are online at the website.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Tostitos Cesar Chavez Latino Scholarship Fund
Grade: 12th grade
Deadline: May 31, 2012 for mailed application
Scholarships for students of Latino descent who are beginning their education at an Arizona college. A 3.0 GPA, an essay, 2 letters of recommendation, and a copy of the SAR portion of the FAFSA are required. Awardees must complete 30 hours of service to the PepsiCo/Frito Lay Adelante Employee Group with 12 months.

EVIT Computer Repair /Networking Program
If a student is considering EVIT for their schedule next year. There is a tour every Tuesday at 1pm during the school year. During the summer, there are tours every Tuesday at 9am. Please call ahead for reservations – 480.461.4034


Bookstore debts must be paid ASAP

The end of the year is approaching quickly.  We are strongly encouraging all students to come to the bookstore and check for debts.  Prom tickets cannot be bought and yearbooks will not be handed out if a student has debts.  If you have any questions please feel free to call the bookstore at 480-472-4410.


IB Spring Fling this Friday

All current and incoming IB students, families, and friends are invited to join us this Friday evening from 6 - 8:30pm for an evening of fun and entertainment! Our IB Spring fling will have something for all ages - with entertainment being provided by teachers, administration, students, and a magician! Westwood Alumni Performing Arts Concert this Saturday, 7pm in the Auditorium

Mesa Hohokam Invitational Track meet at Westwood this Friday

Westwood High School and the Mesa Hohokam's have been working diligently to plan and prepare for the 9th Annual Mesa Hohokam Track Meet, which will be held at Westwood this Friday. April 20th.  Preliminary events will start at noon, and finals will begin at 5:30pm.  The meet will feature nearly 1000 athletes from 20 of the top teams in the East Valley.  Entry fee is $5 for adults, and $3 for students.
