Westwood Band takes all!


It's been a banner school year for the Westwood Band!  Our most prestigious honor came in November when the Band received a Superior with Distinction at the State Marching Band Festival and was awarded the 2016 ABODA Division II Silver Medal at the State Marching Band Championships!

Westwood runs the State Track Meet

sfreeeToday the Warrior PRIDE Flag flies for our State Track Qualifiers and those that placed in the State Track Meet. We had 8 different athletes qualify for the State Meet and we medaled in three different events. James Smith came in 7th in the 110 meter hurdles and 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles and our 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Jesus Romero, Stephan Caraway, Angel Verdugo, and James Smith came in 4th. Our team finished in 17th place overall in the state and the future looks bright. 05/11/2017

Westwood Culinary score the highest in the district!


For the end of program CTE assessments, Westwood's advanced culinary classes scored 11 of the top 15 scores in the entire school district. 5 of the top 7 were Westwood students, and of that, 2 scored the highest overall. 05/08/2017

Westwood Art Rocks!

artToday the flag flies for the art department and art students.  Westwood art students competed in the MPS district show and won a total of 27 ribbons.  This was the most ribbons for all the high schools.  Westwood also competed in the Congressional Art Show
and had two students walk away with an award.  Kelly Siefert place 2nd and Cheyenne Morin 3rd.  Congratualtions to Westwood art.  05/04/2017

Ms. Ruhland recognized as a Life Changer of the Year

iuhToday the flag flies for Ms. Ruhland who has been nationally recognized as Life Changer of the Year. Ms. Ruhland was nominated by administration in the fall semester as a remarkable teacher. Life Changer of the Year recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 public and private school educators across the US who make a difference in the lives of their students. This year they received 720 nominations. From those 720 Life Changers, 15 award winners were chosen and Ms. Ruhland was one of them. Congratulations Ms. Ruhland!  05/01/2017

Warrior Softball in Playoffs!

sbToday the Warrior Pride flag flies for our varsity softball team and coach Hill.  The Warriors took on Mountain Pointe in the first round of the playoffs yesterday and came away with a thrilling 7-6 come from behind victory.  Trailing 6-4 in the 6th inning, Mt. Pointe intentionally walks Stacia Seeton to load the bases (Stacia hit her nation leading 22nd HR earlier in the game).  Elisha Burbank then comes through with a huge bases clearing gapper.  Narina Tjaarda pitched the Warriors to victory.  The Warriors now move on to the sweet 16 of the state tournament.  Congratulations to Warrior softball.  04/27/2017

Warriors compete in first annual Vocational Job Olympics

fgThis past Friday Westwood Warriors Dante Ortega-Umana, Courtnei Peak, Mikayla Begay, Arthur Moore, and Kimberly Chavez-Santana competed in the first annual Vocational Job Olympics competition for Mesa Public Schools.

The competition was held at the student services building and all 6 high schools participated in various vocational events. Westwood won ribbons in two different events and all of the Westwood Warriors showed exemplary Warrior attitudes and cheered on all of their teammates during their events. Coached by Eli Duncan and Ashlee Brown the Warrior Vocational students practiced for weeks leading up to the competition and all their hard work and practice paid off.     04/26/2017

Warrior Softball advance to State!

adfToday the flag flies for Westwood Softball. The Warrior Softball team finished their regular season with a record of 21 wins and 11 loses, including a huge win last night over Red Mountain 14-9. With that victory, the Warriors advance to the state tournament and will play at Mt. Pointe tomorrow at 4:00. Stacia Seeton leads the nation in home runs with 21, yes the nation. The team is ranked 7th Nationally with 42 home runs.         04/25/2017

Warriors win National History Day Competition

nhdToday the warrior pride flag flies for the following warriors for placing in the National History Day Competition. Frankie O'Neill took first place. Abigail Stockwell and Christina Fisher won second place. Katie Clontz, Becca Hansman, Erin Earl, Alyson Hulet and Bailey Smith all took 3rd place! Frankie, Abigail and Christina have also been invited to compete at the National NHD competition in Washington DC this summer!

Westwood Academic Decathlon does it again!

sdfThe Westwood Academic Decathlon team placed 3rd in the State!!! 
Nathan Bergman placed 1st OVERALL in the State with a new State record of 9287!!! He won gold medals in Music, Science and Economics. He won BEST Essay in the State. He also won silver medals in Math and Social Science and a bronze medal in Language and Literature.Frankie O'Neill won gold medals in Art and Social Science. She won a bronze medal in Economics. Liam Wilson placed 3rd overall in the Scholastic Division. He won gold medals in Language and Literature and Essay. He won silver medals in Science and Economics. 03/23/2017

Warrior Softball take the Gracie Haught 2017 Tournament

sbWarrior Softball team traveled to Payson last weekend to participate in a 24 team tournament. The Warriors finished with 7 wins and 1 loss and are the Gracie Haught 2017 Tournament Champions. Mr. Lynch - Principal of the Year!

dfseThe members of Mesa Independent Professional Educators recognize the critical role principals play in the education process. It is principals who set the tone for a school and who have a major impact on the environment under which teachers work and students learn. The success of a school is clearly dependent on the relationship between the faculty and the principal. because of the importance of quality education leadership to teachers and students. Cora Stevens receives the President's Volunteer Service Award

dfCongratulations to senior Cora Stevens on receiving the President's Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes American's of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their community and their country. Cora received both a letter and certificate from the President to thank her and honor her for her service.

Warrior Baseball wins Laveen Classic



Congratulations to our Warrior Baseball Team for winning the Laveen Classic Tournament this past weekend. It was a total team effort as the team batted .376 and finished with a 4-0-1 record by defeating the reigning Division 3 state champs Alhambra in the final. Freshman catcher Erik Ortiz was named the Tournament MVP. Also, good luck to our Warriors as they battle Mountain Pointe today in the first game of the regular season.  02-28-2017

And the Mesa Citizen of the Year....






The Mesa Citizen of the Year Organization held their banquet on Feb. 21st. Along with recognizing the Man and Woman of the Year, they recognized 4 Mesa students for their outstanding leadership and service. With that recognition came a $1000 scholarship to the college of their choice. Westwood stood out with 2 of the 4 winners: Athena Le and Brianna Rangel.  02/24/2017

AcDec team earns Medals!

acdecOver the weekend the AcDec team competed in the Regional Competition and placed 2nd as a team overall.
Nathan Bergman placed 1st overall in the Honors division, winning a 4 year scholarship to an in state school. He also won gold medals in Language and Literature, Music, Science, Art, Math, and Economics, along with a Silver medal in Social Science.
Liam Wilson placed 1st overall in the Scholastic Division, winning a 4 year scholarship to an in state school. He also won gold medals in Social Science, Music, Art, and Essay. Silver in Science and Social Science, and Bronze in Economics.
Frankie O'Neill won Silver medals in Art and Speech, and a Bronze medal in Language and Literature.
Ameya Thatte won a Silver medal for Essay.
Sunil Devaraj won a Bronze medal for Science.
Brendan Carter won a Silver medal in Social Science. 02/15/2017

Outstanding Softball

sbKelsey Ayre, outstanding pitcher for Westwood softball, signed her letter of intent with Mesa Community College.

Stacia Seeton, outstanding all-round player for Westwood softball, signed her letter of intent with Bradley University, a D1 program in Peoria, Illinois.

Senior Brianna Anderson - finalist for ESPNs Character Counts

esToday the Warrior Pride Flag flies for Senior Brianna Anderson. Brianna is a finalist for ESPNs character counts $10,000 scholarship. There are 10 finalists and the winner will be announced in Feb. She will be interviewed today in phoenix by ESPN. Then next Tuesday morning she will be featured on the news talk radio on 98.7 As a finalist she gets a 100.00 giftcard and 2 tickets to any home professional sport event in Phoenix. Math Club rocked CGCC

mathWestwood Math Club rocked the CGCC math competition on November 4. Josh Mecham, Molly Pavey, Sunil Devaraj, Nathan Bergman, and Gorden He all won individual medals (Gordon placed first). Two Westwood teams both won first place: At level I: Nathan Bergman,Molly Pavey, Daniel Lewis, and Athena Le. At level II: Gordon He, Cortez Hill, Sunil Devaraj, and Jonathan Chapman.

Finally, Westwood won the 2nd place trophy for overall best school. 11/14/16

Westwood Band marches to State!

mbOur Band will be performing in the State Championships at 3 PM this Saturday, Nov. 12 at GCC. The Band is ranked 4th in the State with less than 3 points separating the top 4 Bands! Good luck on Saturday!    11/10/2016

Kera Benally selected as AZ female high school student of the year!



Senior Kera Benally was selected as the Arizona female high school student of the year by the Phoenix Indian Center. She will be recognized on 11/16 at a special dinner at the American Indian Excellence Leadership Award ceremony. Congratualtions Kera!   11/08/2016

Westwood Math Club won 1st and 3rd @ NAU High School

iyCongratulations to Westwood Math Club who won both first and third prizes at NAU High School math competition last week. The first place team was Sunil Deveraj, Gordon He, and Jonathon Chapman. Third place was won by Molly Pavey, Nathan Bergman, Varun Srinivasan, and Daniel Lewis.       11/03/2016


fgFall break was a very eventful time for the Westwood Robotics team. Saturday was the competition for the second annual AZ state championship for robotics. Your Westwood team competed very well as one of the most consistent scoring robots on the field and the premium climbing robot at the event. You heard that right, a 120 lb robot that scales a tower! The Westwood alliance played deep into the playoffs ultimately earning a second place finish in the state. Great work robotics team.                            10/20/2016

WNN nominated for Student Emmy

sdfWNN was nominated for a student Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for their TMZ parody episode. We are one of two schools in the southwest to receive a nomination this year. Student Production Awards Recipients will be announced at the Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards Gala on October 8.                    09/12/2016

Ms. Yanik completes the DuPont National Agriscience Teachers Ambassador Academy


Reta Yanik successfully completed the DuPont National Agriscience Teachers Ambassador Academy. She is now an Agriscience Ambassador and one of only 345 teachers nationwide. With this distinction, she will engage in inquiry based activities and explore state of the art teaching concepts. James Smith places 3rd in Jr. Olympic National Championship


James Smith competed at the Junior Olympic National Championship in Sacramento, CA last week and achieved All American status by placing 3rd place in the 400 intermediate hurdles.

 James had a great summer track season - winning state and region championships and breaking the USATF Arizona state record in the 15-16 age group. James currently holds the freshman and sophomore Westwood school records.  08-15-2016
