Dear Students, Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s),

Welcome! Let me introduce myself. I am Susan Sullivan and I am the 9/10th grade SLD Reading teacher here at Westwood High. My desire as your teacher is to make reading fun, informative and cross over to all content areas and in life outside of school. We will be working on many strategies that will help us become better readers as well as informed students. Our goal is to be successful, not just in reading in a reading class, but reading in other courses at Westwood and in our everyday lives. I truly enjoy teaching and I look forward to an exciting year at Westwood High!

My phone number is 480-472-4645. During school hours, you may leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. My e-mail address is I ask that parents please be involved in your child’s academic career, as it will help them be more successful. Communication between Teacher and Parent/Guardian is an important step in student’s success. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback please do not hesitate to contact me.

  2. 2 black or blue ink pens and/or 2 sharpened pencils or mechanical pencil with extra lead

  1. 1 composition notebook or spiral notebook

  2. Assigned reading book

Attendance and Tardy Policy

If you are absent, you are responsible for obtaining the assignments, handouts, notes, etc. from a responsible classmate, blue box or from the class web page.  Your absence is your responsibility.  Makeup work is due 5 school days after your date of absence. Commitments to sports, band, drama, or any other extra-curricular activities are not a reason to turn in late work! Be aware that 9+ absences could lead to loss of credit for the class each semester.

Grading Policy

In this class you will complete credit/no credit assignments/quizzes and letter grade assignments, quizzes and tests.  If you are absent when a test or quiz is given, you must see me to arrange make up. You must make arrangements with me beforehand.

Late Work

You may turn in late work up to 10 school days from the due date.  I will not accept the assignment after this 10 school-day grace period (that is two full weeks).  Please be aware that work turned in any time after the due date will only receive half credit.

Grading Scale

In-class Assignment              40%

Tests & Quizzes                     10%

Class Participation                40%

Class Participation includes attendance but also attention to the lesson, participation within a group and completing in class assignments due at the end of class.

Homework                             10%

                                      Total 100%

Technology Policy

We will follow the district’s policy on technology usage. Please visit Technology Policies and Information for more about technology and its use in the classroom.

You will see a green thumbs up sign alerting you that using technology for academic purposes is currently allowed. During this time students may use their technology for classroom work only.

You may also see a red thumbs down sign alerting you that using technology for any purposes is not currently allowed. All technology must be put away at this time. This usually will occur during direct instruction or when a particular lesson does not require the use.

Please be aware the abuse of this policy may lead to disciplinary actions ranging from minor teacher/student discussion to a referral to administration. If for any reason you need to reach your child, please call the school office (480) 472-4400 and they will send for the student or get a message to them.

Please discuss these policies and expectations with your child.

I am looking forward to a great school year! “Tear em up Westwood!!!”
