Coach Walter Sword
Coach Walt Sword has been teaching and coaching at Westwood since 2000. He teaches Boy's Physical Education and Weight Training. He is the Boys Physical Education Department Chairman and Strength Coach for the sports teams at Westwood. In 2000, he coached the Offensive & Defensive Line for Westwood's runner-up finish 5A State Football Team. He is currently the Head Freshman Football Coach.
Prior to Westwood, Coach Sword taught and coached 1 year at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley. At Bradshaw Mountain, he taught Boy's Physical Education and was the Freshman Head Football Coach. Before Prescott Valley, Coach Sword taught and coached 6 years at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. At Saguaro, he taught Math, Science, and Physical Education. Coach Sword was the Defensive Coordinator for 3 years and the Head Football Coach for 3 years. In 1995, he coached Saguaro High School to its first 4A State Championships in Football.
Before coming to Arizona, Coach Sword taught and coached at Miramar High School and Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In Florida, he taught Math and Science. Coach Sword was the Varsity Offensive Line Coach, the Junior Varsity Defensive Coordinator, and the Strength Coach for the Football Program. Prior to Florida, Coach Sword was the Physical Director for 3 years at the Massillon YMCA/YWCA in Ohio. In Massillon, he was the Strength Coach for the Washington High School - Massillon Tigers Football Program. Before going to Massillon, he was the Physical Director for 3 years at the Downtown YMCA and Sports Director for 3 years at the Hilltop YMCA in Columbus, Ohio
Coach Sword earned his Associated Degree in Physical Education from Shawnee State Community College in Portsmouth, Ohio. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Education from The Ohio State University in Physical Education, Science and Math. Coach Sword earned a Masters Degree in Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix and has 60+ graduate hours beyond his Masters Degree. He has completed the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Sports Performance Coach Certification from the USA Weightlifting Federation.
Coach Sword has been a competitive "drug-free" powerlifter since 1976. He has won the AAU and USA Nationals, the Masters Nationals, and the World Cup. In 2008 and 2009, he was named the top Masters Powerlifter and in 2010 the Best Overall Lifter at the Masters Nationals. In 2011, he was elected to the Powerlifting Hall of Fame of the Natural Athletes Strength Association. He recently turned 61 and broke the American Records in the Squat, Bench, and Deadlift in the Masters 3 - 198 pound class and still holds a World Record Deadlift from 2003.
Coach Sword is married to his wife Ginny Lynn. He has 3 step-children: Jason, Jesse, & Jill. He has 5 grandchildren: Hannah, Mykayla, Jessie, Brylye, Nixon, and Rogan. He has 3 dogs and 2 cats. In his spare time, when he is not lifting weights, he enjoys running, walking his dogs, & spending time with his grandchildren. He is also involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and As Iron Sharpens Iron and Men Coaching Men at his church.
