Our goal is to assist in the development of life-long readers and learners. We help students acquire skills which will enable them to become effective locators and users of information. We act as a resource center and are actively involved in the teaching and learning process of our students.

Library Classes

All students at Wilson take part in a library class. Primary students (kindergarten - third grades) attend for thirty minutes a week, while fourth - sixth grades meet once every two weeks for one hour.

During Media Center class time, Wilson Students learn and practice grade level appropriate information skills, including:

*Location of fiction, nonfiction and reference materials
*Parts of a book
*Research techniques using encyclopedia, atlas, almanac, dictionary and thesaurus
*How to use the computer catalog and Dewey decimal system

We also provide :
Exposure to numerous authors and literary styles
Activities designed to enhance students' literary experiences

Battle of the Books

The Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading program designed to motivate students to read quality literature. Students in 2nd through 6th grades read from a list of selected books. In May representatives are selected from each classroom. Each grade level has a "battle" where individuals answer questions based on the books, individual points are scored and, ultimately, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are chosen.

Checkout Policy

Kindergarten through Sixth Grade -- 1 book
The exception would be if a classroom research project has been assigned, then students may have an additional book on the assigned topic.

Lost & Damaged Books

Students are held responsible for items which are checked out from the Library Media Center in their name. If a book is damaged (torn pages, spills, scribbles) , then it should be brought to the attention of the staff. If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, then repacement cost will be assessed. Students cannot check out another item until fees are paid. Students who have outstanding fines for library books at the end of the school year will have report cards held until the fine is paid. Fines can be paid with cash or a check made out to "Marilyn Wilson Elementary".

Accelerated Reading Program

Accelerated Reader is a research based program that ensures reading success for every child by encouraging students to read independently at a reading level that is appropriate for them. Through AR, reading time is provided, as well as the motivation to want to read.

The AR Process

1. Star test is administered. Independent reading "Zone" is determined.

2. Students check out color coded library books at their level.

3. 15 - 20 minutes of independent reading time each day in the classroom.

4. After the book has been read, an AR quiz can be taken on the computer. Students receive points based on their score and the level of the book. The goal is to maintain 85% correct on quizzes.

5. During AR time in the classroom, teachers monitor each student for progress through daily logs and conversation.

6. A "TOPS" report is printed and sent home to parents after a student takes a test, providing information about student success. (Not all classes print this report.)

7. Teachers monitor students' quiz scores. An average below 85% suggests the need to adjust the level or the length of books until an 85% average or higher is achieved.

How Parents Can Help:

1. Encourage daily reading at home (15 minutes is recommended) as well as reading with and to your child.

2. Discuss what your child is reading.

3. Talk to your child about his/her AR goals.

4. Watch for the TOPS reports to come home and applaud success and progress toward AR goals.
