Who is James K. Zaharis?
Jim Zaharis retired in 1999 as the Superintendent of Mesa Unified School District. Before assuming his position as Superintendent of the Mesa District in 1984, Dr. Zaharis was Deputy Superintendent, Associate Superintendent for Educational Services, Director of Special Projects, Director of Title I, and teacher and coach at Mesa High School.
Dr. Zaharis has served and chaired numerous boards and commissions in the fields of education, health care, planning and zoning, and economic development. He is an active member of the community, and has received many honors, including being named on the The Business Journal’s top 100+ for “The Valley’s Most Influential Business Leaders” in Education; one of “The Executive Educations 100,” as one of the best school managers in North America; All Arizona Superintendent; and Distinguished Professor, American Association of School Administrators’ National Academy of School Executives. He was presented with the Cox Communications Excellence in Leadership Award, Rotary International Community Serve Awards, and an Award of Honor for Outstanding Contributions to Education through Exemplary Relations Practice from the National School of Public Relations Association.
