First Graders Discover the Water Cycle
After reading A Drop Around the World, by Barbara McKinney, Mrs. Anderson's first grade class began an inquiry into the water cycle. Mrs. Kohn and Mrs. Anderson worked together to develop a science experiment in which the students were able to witness the water cycle. Students put water in bags and placed them in different locations with varying levels of sun exposure and temperatures throughout the school. Students observed what happened over the course of four days, before collecting the bags and reflecting on what happened. Using the engineering design process, students worked in collaborative groups to brainstorm ideas and build a model representation of the water cycle. Throughout the process, Mrs. Kohn helped each group incorporate varying types of technology to further enhance their creations.
