Hello! My name is Afton Zapata-Scow. I'd like welcome you to third grade.
For the past twenty years, I've truly embraced teaching. I've taught part-time as a tutor, homeschool instructor, church educator, as well as a long-term substitute for teachers on maternity leave. I've taught every grade level from K-8, LDS seminary, and adult education classes. I love to teach!
I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from ASU and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from NAU. I've also been involved in a variety of activities and service projects within the community. My children have graduated from Zaharis, so I feel right at home.
In 2010, I lost my first husband, Juan Zapata to a serious illness called valley fever meningitis. It taught me great lessons on how to live each day as if it's the last and remain hopeful for a joyful future. In 2013, I married a wonderful man named Shaun Scow, hence my hyphenated last name. We're raising a big family. Together, we have six children with one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law. My daughter is married and lives in California, my second child is recently married and we have four more boys at ages 17 to 22. Our youngest is a senior in high school this year.
My hobbies include writing and traveling. My husband, Shaun works for American Airlines and operates our small business, AZ Window Ware selling shutters and blinds. www.azwindowware.com. I truly enjoy life and hope to share that same joy with my third graders. You can read more about my journey at www.aftonzapata.com.
Life is meant for us to enjoy meaningful experiences, share thoughts and feelings, progress in knowledge, and make the world a better place through friendship and service. Let's love to learn and learn to work together!
