WELCOME to Third Grade with...
Mrs. Afton Zapata-Scow
Hello! My name is Afton Zapata-Scow. Welcome to third grade at Zaharis Elementary.
I love to teach! I love my students and I love our 3rd grade curriculum. I believe in working hard and having fun while doing it!
For twenty-five plus years, I've been a teacher in a variety of ways. While raising a family, I was a tutor, home-school instructor, church educator, and long-term substitute. This is my 6th year in third grade.
I earned my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from ASU and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from NAU. I've also been involved in a variety of activities and service projects within the community. My children graduated from Zaharis, so I feel right at home.
In 2010, after a twenty year marriage, I lost my first husband, Juan Zapata to a serious illness called valley fever meningitis. It taught me great lessons on how to live each day as if it's the last and remain hopeful for the future. In 2013, I married a wonderful man named Shaun Scow, hence my hyphenated last name. We've raised a big family. Together, we have six children and one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law, with our first grandchild on the way.
My hobbies include writing and traveling. My husband, Shaun works for American Airlines and runs our small business, AZ Window Ware selling shutters and blinds and sunscreens.
Life is meant for us to enjoy! Like our Zaharis mission statement, as third graders, we are learning, caring and rejoicing together to create and more just and compassionate world. I truly enjoy life and hope to share that same joy with my third graders. Let's love to learn and learn to work together!
