### Math

##### Math

In 5th grade we split for math, having one accelerated class and three regular math classes.  In the accelerated class, they explore the 5th and 6th grade curriculum.  This a great opportunity to challenge and support everyone.  The 5th grade teachers communicate well and work together to make sure everyone has a successful math experience.  5th grade math is exciting and challenging as we begin to apply skills in new ways. • Operations & Algebraic Thinking • Write & interpret numerical expressions. • Analyze patterns & relationships. • Number & Operations in Base Ten • Understand the place value system • Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths. • Number & Operations - Fractions • Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and  divide fractions. • Measurement and Data • Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system. • Represent and interpret data. • Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. • Geometry • Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world mathematical problems. • Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. ### Spelling

##### Spelling

In spelling we will be examining words to understand the patterns and meanings. We will work on breaking words down into syllables, learning rules, and putting into practice what we've learned on our weekly tests.  I want the students to learn to think about words rather than just to memorize. We will be using root words, affixes, and meaning to develop vocabulary and help us spell.  The students will be expected to use the things we learn in their own writing. [More...]
