The Z-fit Running Club started at Zaharis in the spring 2017 with 50 students who trained to participate in the 3rd Annual RUN3rd 5k.  This year we plan to expand our season so our runners can participate in more local events.

All students in grades 4-6 are welcome to join - we will meet Mondays and Thursdays after school from October through March.

Throughout the season we will participate in a number of local events.  These are a fun way for the kids and their families to be part of the community and celebrate everything the kids are accomplishing.  Our biggest local event will be the Phoenix Marathon where most of our runners will participate in the 10k.  For the older students who have experience with running events, we will offer the option to train for and participate in the half marathon. 

Our culminating event will be the 4th Annual RUN3rd 5k on Saturday, April 7th, 2018.  We will be hosting this event at Red Mountain High School and it is important that our whole team attend.   

 

History on the RUN3rd 5k:

On April 11th, 2015 the Przeors hosted the Inaugural #RUN3rd 5k.  This event was sparked by their friendship with actor Sean Astin and his #RUN3rd twitter campaign.  In 2012, Sean prompted the world with his mission - I run 1st for myself, I run 2nd for my family, I #RUN3rd for YOU - from that, he asked for everyone to submit dedications he could carry with him through the LA Marathon.  From that day, #RUN3rd grew into a global twitter community and Sean was looking for a way to bring people together in person.  A couple years later, Mrs. Przeor began developing #RUN3rd lessons to bring to her Brinton Running Club students.  Sean loved what they were doing and came out to help us raise funds for after-school running programs by hosting a 5k.  Since then it has become an annual event and, to date, we have donated over $30,000 to support running programs in the district.

Since the Z-fit runners were participants in the 2017 event, we received a donation from the 5k. We will be using that to help build our program and provide opportunities for our runners. 

 

Our Mission: To empower students to take control of their actions, accept responsibility and learn the skills they need to be successful in life.

 

 

Commitment:  It is important your child be able to attend both practices each week for the entire season – we will be training for some big events and the practices will be critical to making sure your child is prepared. We will be offering a lot of opportunities to participate in community events throughout the season and we would love to see your child attend as many of these events as possible.  These events are fun for the kids and help keep them motivated.  They are also great opportunities for the students (and your family) to get involved and feel successful.

 

Practice:  Our practices are held after school from 2:15-3:30 every Monday and Thursday**.  
**During parent/teacher conference weeks, times will be adjusted to match school dismissal**

 

Please remind your child to have the following items every Monday & Thursday:

  • Running shoes
  • Comfortable clothes to stretch and run in
  • Running hat/visor and sunscreen are recommended
  • Water bottles are highly recommended

 

Pick-up:  Parents/Guardians are responsible for making sure their child is picked-up at 3:30 in front of the school. Let us know if you would like your child to walk home or go to Explore (Kids Corner). Please notify us of any transportation changes prior to the start of practice.

 

Fees: Participating in our running club is free and a couple of the events will be free for your child if he/she attends practices and keeps track of his/her mileage.  Shirts, sweatshirts and other events will be additional, optional costs.  As much as we can, we will use the money raised from our 5k along with ECA money to cover these costs – but, that means we need people to donate to ECA.  Any AZ taxpayer gets a dollar for dollar tax credit for ECA donations.  In order for your ECA donation to be used for the Z-Fit Running Club, please follow the links and make sure you select to donate to the Zaharis PE Department.  THANKS!

We will be working with other schools in the district and participating in events together.  The team we will work most closely with is the Brinton Running Club.  Mrs. Przeor coached their team for 9 years and is looking forward to bringing what she learned and created to Zaharis.
