The standards are high for teachers in our district, so we are constantly involved in the pursuit of excellence in our educational programs. Adhering to the same high standards as regular teachers, our substitute teachers are considered an important part of the educational program. Substitute teachers contribute much to the children of this community.

Our office is continuously searching for high quality substitute teachers to maintain an average of 1,000 individuals that are approved to substitute teach with MPS. Approximately 350-550 substitute teachers work each school day to support over 80 campuses and 3600 classrooms.

We employ an average of 303 substitutes a day, with a high of approximately 450 on a very busy day. (We employ approximately 3,600 contract teachers.) An automated calling system, SmartFindExpress (SFE) is used to request substitutes and to fill absences.

Daily Rates

• Substitute teachers with a valid Arizona substitute teaching certificate will be paid a daily rate of $140 per day. 

• Substitute teachers with a valid Arizona teaching certificate will be paid a daily rate of $170 per day. 

• Assignments that are 4.5 hours and less will be considered a half day, and will be paid at half the daily rate.

Long-term Rates
Long-term rates apply to assignments that are expected to last more than 20 days.
