Mr. Skip Allen
My name is Lawrence "Skip" Allen and I am so excited to be teaching Kindergarten here at Porter in Room 5!! I've taught kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade and 3rd grade as well as special education. I grew up in New Jersey and also lived in Michigan and Massachusetts for awhile.
I helped open up Mendoza School and taught at Jefferson Elementary my first year in Mesa! I taught at Stevenson School for 20 years before moving to Porter two years ago. I've taught EL (English Learners) for many years. I always tell my students to follow their dreams!!! A number of my former students became teachers and another former student is a very successful movie producer who has a movie coming out soon! I love hearing from former students and their families!
I received my Master's Degree from NAU in Flagstaff in Educational Leadership/Principalship and I received my Undergraduate Degree from Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. I have my ESL certification and I'm certified for Early Childhood.
This year I'm so excited to be teaching Kindergarten (Kinder) here at Porter in Room 5! I loved working with Principal Ray when she was a principal over at Stevenson Elementary! I spent all of last year teaching BOTH Kinders and First Graders online and they all made excellent progress! ELL students are dear to my heart as I've had two Hispanic foster sons and one ended up being in my 1st grade classroom! He will now be in 10th grade this year!! My cat Scarlett was part of my online class last year!!! During the summer I love going up to Pine (near Payson) where I have a summer place. I enjoy hiking, swimming, entering contests and NASCAR.
I wanted to be a teacher since I was four years old! My older brother is autistic and I remember teaching him when I was very young. We went to Disneyland two years ago and had a wonderful time!! We had a special Meet and Greet with Mickey Mouse. I have also met many Nascar Drivers and have also met Jeff Dunham who enjoys puppets as much as I do!!
. We have a wonderful aide Ms. Yoselin who speaks Spanish. We also have two great volunteers named Mrs. Walton and Ms. Jo. Mrs. Walton taught first grade for over 30 years.
Soon I will send home information about a wonderful site called www.learn.education.com. Your child will be using this site at school for reading, math and writing. Once I give you the login he/she will also be able to get on this site at home on a computer or tablet. It keeps track of your child's progress. There's also another program called EPIC BOOKS. One of my kinders last year read over 600 books online!!! In the meantime I would recommend www.starfall.com We also love singing songs by Jack Hartmann whom I've met a few times. Your child will learn many new songs in kindergarten and will probably also tell you that we use puppets a lot in the classroom. Kids LOVE using puppets and so do I!!
Many of the students need to work on recognizing their letters without having to sing the ABC Song. Here is a link to a practice worksheet which I will be sending home soon.
I'm so excited about the 2021-2022 school year! I like to make learning fun for my students!
Kindergarten is such an important year for your child!!! A great communication device I use is CLASS DOJO. This is a great way for you to ask any questions you may have. It's also a way I can send out quick messages either to everyone or to individual parents. Once again, I'm so excited to be your child's teacher here at Porter Elementary! Welcome to Room 5!!
