Westwood Warriors – Unified PE

Westwood physical education department believes active participation by students to be the most important and beneficial aspect of physical education.  Students are encouraged and expected to participate in physical activity which contributes to a healthy lifestyle.    It is the single factor that students totally control, therefore, the emphasis of the grading scale is based on participation.  It is also important that each student gain a better understanding of their own level of fitness, and the factors that contribute to good health.   Fitness testing will be done each semester.

Unified Physical Education provides a unique opportunity for students with and without intellectual disabilities to come together through ongoing educational and physical activities. The Unified Physical Education class is structured around active participation to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness.  The class will focus on sports knowledge and skills, game play, and fitness skills/activities. Additionally, the class supports the development of leadership skills for all students, and the empowerment of ALL students to foster an inclusive class.

Unified Physical Education class can be a gateway for further participation in Special Olympics programs and events. AIA Unified Sports combines an approximately equal number of people with intellectual disabilities and people without intellectual disabilities for training and competition. The AIA sports that will be offered are Badminton, Basketball, and Track & Field.  In order to participate in the AIA competition additional paperwork is needed, such as a sports physical and the Westwood Athletic packet.
