Mesa Public Schools is proud to announce that, beginning with the Class of 2025, graduating seniors who have formally enlisted in a branch of the United States Armed Forces will be permitted to wear official military-issued stoles during their high school graduation ceremonies. The wearing of military stoles was already in practice at the majority of the high schools in the district and will now be a requirement at graduation ceremonies at all high schools within Mesa Public Schools.
This decision reflects the district’s deep respect for students who have chosen to serve our country and aligns with Mesa’s broader commitment to honoring all forms of student achievement.
“This is an important and appropriate way to recognize the commitment of our students who are preparing to serve in the United States military,” said incoming Superintendent Dr. Matthew Strom. “Graduation marks a major milestone, and it is fitting that students entering military service are honored for their choice to serve our nation.”
The district is currently revising its procedures under Policy 5-217 to formally include military stoles as permitted graduation attire. While the existing language recognizes academic achievements acknowledged by city, county, state, and tribal governments, the updated procedure will explicitly include enlistment in the U.S. Armed Forces as eligible for such recognition.
The revised procedure is expected to be presented to the Governing Board this summer, ensuring alignment between district practices and policy.
