4th Grade

Dear Families,

Welcome to 4th grade! We are thrilled to have your child join us this year and are looking forward to an exciting journey of learning, growth, and discovery. Fourth grade is a pivotal year where students build on their foundation and begin to explore concepts in greater depth across all subject areas.

Here is an overview of the 4th-grade curriculum we’ll be covering this year in Mesa Public Schools:

  • Develop skills in identifying themes, summarizing content, and understanding characters, settings, and events.

  • Strengthen their writing by creating opinion pieces, informative texts, and narratives.

  • Engage in discussions and presentations to improve speaking and listening skills.

  • Expand vocabulary and grammar knowledge through hands-on activities.

Mathematics

In math, students will:

  • Master multi-digit multiplication and division.

  • Work with fractions by comparing, adding, and subtracting them.

  • Explore geometry concepts, including symmetry and classifying shapes.

  • Solve real-world word problems using critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Science

In science, we will explore:

  • Energy transfer and how energy changes forms.

  • Earth’s processes, such as weathering, erosion, and the impact of natural disasters.

  • Plant and animal adaptations and the relationships within ecosystems.

  • The scientific method through experiments and hands-on activities.

Social Studies

In social studies, our focus will be:

  • Understanding the geography, history, and cultures of the Americas.

  • Exploring the influence of indigenous peoples and European settlers.

  • Examining civic engagement and the role of government in our communities.

  • Learning basic economic principles, including trade and resource management.
